On my website, BobBattleLaw.com, I state that the motto of Virginia should be changed from "Virginia is for Lovers" to "Virginia is for Speed Traps!" There has been no slowdown in speeding enforcement in the first quarter of 2007, however, the extent that Virginia traffic enforcement has gone to "Big Brother" tactics in 2007 is staggering. Previously I have posted on speeding enforcement from helicopters, marked and unmarked muscle cars, and red light tickets from cameras.
The latest tool is the use of a high-tech video/laser/GPS system in Fredericksburg, Virginia for parking tickets.
Fredericksburg is the first locality in the nation to adopt autoChalk, an automated ticketing system that uses video, laser and GPS technology. The system is mounted on a police vehicle, allowing authorities to issue tickets without leaving the driver's seat. The system likely will be implemented in early July.Police Chief David Nye says autoChalk will allow police to cover what took up to 1.5 hours in about 20 minutes. The system also will track violators who, until now, have wiped chalk marks from their tires, moved their cars a few inches or benefited from rainy days. Tickets will be mailed to violators.
